There is literally nothing contributed to this sub when people post pictures of cheese and ask if it is still edible.
It is a huge volume of posts which are just not in any way adding to the value of following this sub.
The same can be said about “is this white spot mold?” And the inevitable “it is fine those are just calcium lactate” response.
These posts flood through this sub nonstop and simply do a nothing but encourage more of the same.
Can the rules be changed to ban these low effort posts? I don’t think these rules in any way would diminish the spirit of cheese enjoyment and knowledge this sub espouses, it will only improve it.

Or make your own sub with your own rules?
I agree. I joined this sub because I’m a cheese monger, so It seemed like a sub I’d want to follow, but it’s flooded with posts asking if cheese is safe to eat and very low effort pictures of cheese with vapid captions.
There were 4 total posts in this vain in the past seven days. Hardly an epidemic to create a rule, just scroll by. This sub is already slow enough.

I disagree, if people want to learn more about cheese then surely this is the right place?
It depends on whether you’re going to share that cheese with us …
Nah man, just skip the post
I feel like mouldy cheese is 99% common sense. I’ve literally never asked anyone as an adult if my bit of cheese is mouldy. I can tell with my own eyes and nose.
I don’t think this sub has active mods, so many non cheese posts are never removed.
..but but with out your guidance how I do I not know to eat cheese that has been left out in the sun for 17 months and is covered in raccoon piss? How will I know if it is safe!!!!!!
If you click the little “joined” button on the sub page then press “leave” it stops you from seeing those posts.
100% agree it looks like more of /cheesenewbies sub
Do you think that someone is going to spend the time to ask another small group sub about mold? Why not just either ignore or answer?
I actually learn a lot about cheese from the “is it mold?” posts.
I learned that white spots on Parmesan are not mold and I had been tossing perfectly good cheese away.
I learned that white fuzzy mold on Brie is actually part of the rind and totally okay to eat. I had been throwing that away too.
I learned that the wrong color mold on already purposefully moldy cheese is NOT okay.
This knowledge empowers people to better enjoy cheese, so I don’t see the harm. Most subscribers to this subreddit are just EATING cheese, not mongering it.
I guess yours was moldy. Well done for cutting all of it out though! Must of taken ages by the look of how many holes you made.
I don’t like the mold posts because I want to be intrigued and inspired by cheese, not put off by pictures of mold (even if some of them aren’t moldy).
Maybe we make a r/isthismold or r/canIeatthis sub and refer everyone there.
A thousand times yes! When I started following this sub I quickly realized that it was mostly those kind of post you’re describing plus the occasional interesting post about cheese. What’s frustrating is that most of the time, the answers is always the same for every cheese! But sadly, we find this kind of behaviour in every sub. You can go on any skin care sub for exemple and ppl are posting close up pictures of their faces and asking “is my skin dry or oily?”…but anyways, I would also love this rule be implemented in some way.
Take another view. The people of this sub are saving perfectly good cheese from being thrown away.
I strongly support getting rid of mold, best by, expiration, and “I left it out” posts.
I do find them annoying but not to much, sometimes they open up the chance to talk about a specific cheese and what it should and should be like.
But yes it gets annoying.
no.
What is that type of slicer called? I can’t find one like it anywhere. Had one as a kid and made making nachos so easy.
Posts like these on any sub just scream, “I have no life and spend my entire existence on this sub”.
This is one of my favorite subreddits, but it needs a substantial amount of rules and enforcement. The quality of half these posts is really, really poor.
I’ve honestly learned so much about what is NOT mold from this sub that it’s saved me multiple blocks of cheese since joining. I don’t really think that educating people on this stuff is “low effort” lol this is a mf cheese sub. I can see how it’d be annoying if you’re a cheese wizard, though. Maybe some sort of pinned mega thread would work?
Yes they should be sent to Mold Crown Court
Oh yes, definitely agree. They are repetitive and most of all *disgusting*.
I’m learning what is and isn’t good to see in various cheeses. Maybe put on a tag that asks about the cheese.
I like the posts and appreciate the comments that go into detail
It’s a public forum with unlimited space. Yet people want to ban the ones they don’t like.
Perhaps a single weekly thread that is pinned and called “Is this cheese safe?”
Literally every adult person ate mold in their life. Maybe it is disgusting, but it won’t kill you.
