Unopened, wrapped Edam cheese kept in the fridge expired last May 2023. Still safe to eat?
This is an unopened edam cheese I got last Christmas. I never got to open it bc I got arnd 3 of these last Christmas. Found out today it expired last May 2023. Can I still eat it?
I’ve eaten cheese with expiration dates further past than that. If it looks and smells fine, I’d do it

Dutchie here, yes you can eat this, no problem, might even be better than a year ago. This might not be the nicest cheese tho, never heard of the brand and it is made in a part of the Netherlands that has nothing to do with cheese at all…..Probably just made for the export outside Europe……………

It would have been better to leave it without the plastic and out of the fridge actually… But as it is still whole (at least from what we can see on the pic) and the Edam cheese is coated with wax with the purpose of long preservation.
Other than that you should have a fine piece of aged Edam. Please allow it to warm at least one hour out of the fridge before cutting it: it will be easier to cut and you’ll avoid accidents, as cold is obviously harder but must importantly leaving it at ambience temperature will allow the aroma and flavor to come out.
Once you finally break the wax seal: do not put it back on the fridge. Unless you’re living in a hot/warm area, Edam cheese is not supposed to be refrigerated. If it is refrigerated it will capture mold quite quickly in absence of light and in presence of humidity. Instead put it somewhere cool in the house, cover with a dry, clean cloth or inside a Tupperware that has ventilation system.

Use the ‘is this safe’ flair.
