  1. Where I live, mountain pies are like bready hotpockets you make using a mountain pie maker (like a sandwich press on the end of long tongs) with ingredients inside on an open fire.

They call it “Colorado style” but there’s really only one place that makes it that way (BeauJos) so I’m not sure it really qualifies. It’s OK but could be a lot better if the dough was less dry and more flavorful.

I learned about this from dunkeys really in depth video about the best pizza from every state. They make it that way because that’s the way old gold miners would make it back in the day when they walked out of a tunnel.

Wow, lol. Here I am thinking that a lot of pizzas would be better with way less dough…

  5. I have been there and didn’t hate it. The honey to squeeze on the crust was a nice touch, it was like they knew I’d had an edible lol

  6. Not everyone considers this Colorado style.

A sort of distant relative of mine who used to own the old Coors Tavern in Denver was the first place to serve pizza in Denver (according to family lore). It was probably close to what you would find in Italy as they were typical North Denver Italians (related inlaw to the Smaldones).

That’s Colorado style in my view. Simple, not gimmicky, not claiming to be anything unusual. Crust, sauce, cheese, basic toppings.

People are just making shit up now.

There are three styles of Pizza. New York, Chicago, and the only one you actually need to try, New Haven Apizza (*”Ah-beez”*).

Hell no 🤣 paying for over proofed gargantuan crust and barely any cheese and tomatoes/sauce.. That’s a pizza crime where I’m from! 🤣🤣

  9. I used to live in CO and liked Beau Jo’s OK but it didn’t have anything to do with the crust + honey that apparently makes it “Colorado style”.

Honestly, after moving away I miss Black Jack’s homemade ranch a lot more.

  10. The only way I’d want that much crust is if it was stuffed with cheese or something.  Even then it’s too much.

In my experience Colorado (and Hawaii honorable mention) has the worst pizza of any state I’ve been.. except blue pan pizza in Denver. Holy shit they’re good.

  12. Beau Jo’s? I got it once and I enjoyed it but in a cafeteria pizza kinda way. I did enjoy dipping the crust, but I wish it had more flavor on its own.

Edit:Disregard the question, only just saw the second picture lol

This looks more like a bread bowl type creation. Still looks good, but I wouldnt call it pizza.

  14. Man I miss Beau Jo’s. The honey with that crust is exquisite. Do they still have the big pizza challenge?

    Edit: Spelling -.-

  15. Life Long Coloradoan. That’s not a thing. They are trying to make it a thing “Colorado Pizza” is not a thing.

I’ve been here! It hits so hard after flying in for a bachelor party, drinking that night, sleeping like 4 hours, and then hiking Mt Bierstadt without proper winter gear or time to acclimate to elevation. Great pizza and the staff was super chill. They gave us all our own pitchers of water.

Beau Jo’s was amazing. I went back in 2006 and always swore I’d go back. I also had Tommyknocker beer. It was great as well!

From my son who is a UC Boulder grad “It’s not the worst pizza you’ll ever eat, but it’s a tourist trap for sure”.

  19. I’m not sure which location you went to, but the one in Fort Collins is pretty much known as the worst pizza in the city. It’s just not good.

  20. I have been going to southern Colorado for 50 years and have never heard of Colorado style pizza. Is this a Denver thing?

Had the best spicy pickle shot of my life right across the street from beau jos, at clear creek cidery and eatery. If youre still there and like spicy pickle shots, dont miss out!

Its a bit bland, and way way way overpriced for crust with a side of pizza, I’m talking 20+ dollars for their large which would be the size of anywhere else’s medium. I could see it being good if the crust wasn’t just plain bread, shit even just a garlic butter crust seasoning would be better than nothing. It’s a fun concept where the crust is a dessert, but there is zero effort going on, ffs, fairy toast has more effort than bread and honey.

I did just hop on their website and they now sell flat crusted pies that have the potential to be better but the pricing is still just too hard to swallow.

  23. Ain’t mountain pizza if it isn’t topped with mountain oysters.

And no, I have never had it nor do I plan to.

  24. spyaleatoire on

    Ah yeah Beaujoes
Colorado native, it is certainly unique – but it’s the one chain that calls it that, so I dunno if it’s entirely fair to say that’s actually Colorado’s style of pizza. Most of our joints don’t actually make pizza this way.
It’s location specific, one nearby is really really good, most are very okay at best. Too much dough, albeit they have a smaller version that is just less dough that’s a lot better.

Never knew Colorado style existed. There’s a place here in St. Louis that does a similar crust that they call “braided”, although not quite as thick as this.

I live 10 minutes down the road from this place. Damn, i have to order one sometime.
