Was doing my usual weekend Whole Foods cheese aisle stroll today and chatting with the cheese person, who told me that he’s gonna be cutting into this whole wheel of blue cheese later today and how excited he was. I was of course intrigued, and he offered to cut it on the spot. And oh boy is it one of the best blues I’ve ever had!
The wheel was soaked in brandy inside the package, and covered on top with cranberries. There’s a whole range of fruity cheeses and some of them just don’t work, but this one is just phenomenal. It’s moderately creamy and tangy, semi-soft, crumbles easily, and the forceful punch of the blue goes so well with the aroma of the wine-infused rind, and the layer of cranberries just soaks up the flavor from both sides.
Utterly amazing, and even better when you get to taste a cheese right after it’s cut open. Running back to getting more!!

It sounds like it was made to mimick a port + blue cheese course, which is truly one of the greatest food pairings our species has lucked into.

    I’m sure this was delicious!

Awesome, it’s a very nice cheese. The combination of the cheese with the cranberries works really well. It’s been a while since I had it. I need it now.

Since I forgot to add the producer but seem to be unable to edit the post, this cheese is from La Casearia Carpenedo, an Italian producer established in 1961. I’ve had their ‘drunken cheeses’ before from Eataly and loved it! But this blue is truly the best. Wholehearted recommendation

Hm. Maybe I should have checked out the cheese fridge when we were there yesterday. Though I’m assuming they don’t have the same things at each WF.

  5. Sounds delicious. I currently have an aged sheep milk cheese that is topped with brandy, then a layer of must from Tempranillo wine, before aging. This blue sounds not entirely dissimilar, to me.

  6. Can confirm, it’s delicious. Have you tried Blugins? It’s an Italian blue that’s rubbed with gin and various spices. I think I like it even more than Blu ’61!

Edit – Ah, I see they are both from the same producer. All the more reason to give it a try if you haven’t!
