Probably the most expensive cheese I’ve bought from a grocery store, this cheddar by Hook’s is aged for 15 years (!!). So this one was made in 2010 (crazy to think how long ago that has become). I’ve never had any cheddar like this, super firm, creamy, very salty (the crystals give a very clear crunch when you bite into them), unbelievably rich for a cheddar, like a block of salted cultured butter. Reminds me of salted egg yolks too. I ate it by itself, it’s so unique I felt that it deserved my full attention.
I’m not the biggest cheddar person so may not be getting a lot more, but this is an experience worth having. (I mean, you’re paying for the time and all the care!) Found this at my local Whole Foods, check yours if you’re interested?

There’s a cheese shop in my home town that makes their own Cheddar. They do everything from mild through to 20+ years old. Amazing stuff. I don’t get back there all that often, but when I do it’s a real treat to grab some stinky old ched
damn, i’m spoiled living in wisconsin. just today i bought some cheese… 19 year white cheddar $17.79 lb
Our Wholefoods gets the Tillamook 10 year reserve once a year. Super good
On a Monday morning, usual “How was your weekend?” conversation at work. I wanted to tell coworkers about my great cheese find. I only got as far as , ” Weekend was great. I picked up a 15 year old…” and I watched everyone’s face cringe before I even got the word “…cheese.” out. They had stopped listening before I finished my sentence.
“Cheese! I said cheese. Weren’t you guys listening?”
Assholes.
Found out that i’m not a big fan of cheddar.
That thing probably tastes almost fake, like a concentrated Cheetos.
When I worked at WF, I hated cutting this. Cut too think, it’s too expensive and most people pass it by, cut it too thin and it crumbled horribly. I got good at it but was always knowing that I was probably going to shrink more than I sold. It’s not a bad cheese though, I preferred the 5 year aged taste-wise.
Wow are you in Madison or is Hooks cheese national? I’ve gone fishing with some of the Hook family without going into further detail lol.
And they fuckin’ wrapped it in plastic. 🤦♂️
Our cheese shop recently had some 15-year cheddar, which just tasted sour to me. Someone else must have thought so as well, because the price per pound was less than that of the same company’s four-year cheddar.
No. Just no. I love good quality cheese, but damn.
Ok, but, you bought it at “Whole Paycheck”! What is the normal price?
Hooks 15 year cheddar is really good. Hope you enjoy it!
That‘s like $5 at Woodman‘s. Maybe $10 that’s anyplace other than Hole Foods.
That’s not cheddar. It’s orange…
Absurd
I’m really picturing that in a chilled cheese and pickle sandwich. I might need to track some down…
no thanks
