Alright so I’ve been curious about this cheese since seeing a lot of you Cougar Gold lovers post lately. I checked out their products online and the cans go for $33/each.
How the hell is Safeway selling it for $60!?! $70 for non-members…
That just seems insane to me. I get them marking it up a bit but they are literally doubling the price. How can it be legal for them to profit this much off a single product that isn’t theirs by label!? Blows my mind!
Anyway, just thought I’d share this here in case anyone was thinking of purchasing or come across it in the store. You’ll save lots of dollars ordering online instead 🙂

Legal? Can sell things at any price you like, folks must be paying it, I noticed the same thing maybe 6mo ago at my Safeway, they have kept stocking it, someone is buying it.
Just buy from the source then my guy, fuck safeway
Sorry, no cheese is worth that for me.
I paid 33 bucks from the source.
I have a tin of Cougar Gold and a tin of Viking on the way from the creamery right now. Just order it direct. This price is stupid. The cheese is fantastic. Totally worth $33.00 per tin plus a nominal shipping fee.
Curious if these are Safeways near the creamery, or far away?
You can charge whatever you want for whatever you want. MRPs are regulated by the manufacturer and if it exists they just stop selling to that whole saler if they breach contract. That’s about all they can do.
I feel like this is a moot point. Just don’t buy the cheese, it will sit and take up precious shelf space and they will eventually be forced to make the price reasonable OR stubbornly hold onto it.
They gonna catche me in the bathroom with a can opener and like 12 empties.
Just looked it’s $85 on Amazon
The only time I buy Cougar Gold at a grocery store is when the cheese counter has opened a can and is selling wedges of it.
Of course, I’d buy it from the store if it was ever listed near the actual price, but it is Reddit’s presumptive, most popular cheese after all.
Margins that high are about average for specialty products.
I want to find out more about this but I don’t want to google “cougar gold”
It’s always been priced much higher at grocery stores.
I mean, for that price, I’d want to try it before I commit to buying it. Swap the labels with a big can of tuna 😂
Hm. I guess the prices at Thorpe fruit mill were actually really good.
It’s the holiday season. Expect $80+ cans in the next few weeks.
Almost bought a tin at the local Yokes market in Post Falls, Id. last week, going for $49. I thought that way too high. With the shipping from the college it’s not much more. Maybe I’ll rethink it and buy some.
Is this in pesos?
It gets marked up like crazy when It ends up on the shelf.
Definitely just order through the school site.
They are getting it through distribution who takes a cut and they are not going to sell it for no profit. It’s over-hyped and you can buy better cheese.
What’s so good about it ?
I rather buy from the source, wayyyy cheaper and you are actually supporting them directly, Safeway is a joke
I can’t believe i just impulse bought a can of cheese from a college
If it’s too expensive OP, then just use a different bait for your cougar traps. Personally I just use rotten gopher meat and that works just fine for my household 🤷🏻♂️
I just picked up 5 cans! From their website…
Two pounds of cheese. In a can. For $60. Just no. For $30/pound, you can get some of the best artisanal cheeses on the planet, and Cougar Gold is not one of them.
Welcome to America, where you can sell anything for whatever price the market will bear, from insulin to canned cheese! Just don’t raise your price too much because of emergency conditions and you’re good to go.
That stuff better be made from real cougar milk for that price.
