My first thought was it’s probably wax, but I can see purple veining and the label says Cabernet Souvignon, which is a red wine – so the cheese is probably washed with the wine and gets the purple colour from that. If you’re not sure, chew some – if it’s wax or plastic or cloth, you’ll know pretty quickly and you can spit it out. If it’s none of those things, it’s safe to eat.
>Also does anyone know if this has lactose in it
It’s cheese. Cheese almost always has *some* lactose in it, because it’s made from milk. However, since the lactose is in the whey (which the cheesemaking process usually removes), harder cheeses have less lactose. I’m lactose intolerant and can eat most cheeses.

Red wine wash. Edible.
I do believe this cheese contains lactose. Only a handful don’t, harder cheeses tend do be lower in content, but I’m not a pro on this.

Yes it’s edible and yes there is lactose.
Respectfully why did you cut it like that?!

the red is the wine flavor… you ruined it for everyone else

Edible wine wash. That cheese is delicious, though I prefer the Merlot version.
Definitely has lactose! It’s cheese. Maybe less than softer cheeses though.
What kind of mad lad cuts cheese like that!

Yes it has lactose, it’ll be a very small amount. I’m extremely reactive to milk and cream, but I regularly eat A LOT of cheese – brie, Camembert, gruyere, Goats, you name it, and have no reaction at all.

most cheese has lactose, but not as much as milk or cream

Everything that is part of the cheese is edible, it will not kill you, should it be eaten? That’s another matter entirely, and a very complex one.

Posting this separately from a reply to someone else — cheeses aged in excess of 6mo have *zero lactose*.
Edit — just went and verified the age on this cheese. There’s no lactose.

How y’all literally can’t tell this is sarcasm is insane.

Thanks everyone for the replies! Consensus is that yes it’s edible and no it does not have lactose.
This absolute was not a troll post I am legitimately just learning something new haha

Ooh, I’ve had this before! The purple is just wine from the washing process. Also it probably has lactose in it. My favorite from this brand is their balsamic parm. It’s so good on a nice buttery cracker like a Ritz or a Club.

I’ve had it before, but not under the Kirkland name. The wine wash is edible and I did call the customer service on time and they told me is as around a 1-2% lactose content. Milk has like 5% if I remember correctly. I ate a few pieces and felt alright, but then going back the next day and eating the whole block was a bad idea.

The color is from the addition of the Cabernet. Dairy that is lactose free or has been treated for lactose intolerance is usually labeled as such

Nice to see that Costco picked up Sartori and let them keep their branding instead of just repackaging it.

If this is a serious question, yes it’s edible. Its only purple because it has been soaked in Cabernet wine. Most cheese will have some lactose, especially if it isn’t hard
