You were good to me Fairlife. You were good to a lot of us, and in some ways you're still the best. You've got great flavor, your macros as excellent, and you're usually available. The lactose free part is important for some of our partners (I know were not exclusive) but that's never been important to me. I knew you had some red flags from the beginning, like being in a 52oz bottle right off the bat so you never got caught with the "one less olive" trick. I was willing to look past that, the mildest of corner cutting. But the days of getting to kiss you for $3.50 when you were on sale seem to be gone forever. You are now over $12 dollars per gallon.

And for what? 4g of protein and 10 less calories than than Classic Skim. Look no one is saying Skim is better than you, but do you really think you're more than 4x better than her? Because that's what you're charging.

I can't do it anymore. I'll have to find those 4g of protein from somewhere else, like literally half an extra bite of chicken. Those 10 calories I'll make up just by carrying Skim's 8lb jugs.

We've had a good run but you need to check yourself and come back to reality. Until then Skim is gonna be my new go to Moo.

  1. Try Carbmaster nonfat milk if you have a Kroger near you! 60 calories and 11g protein per 8oz cup! Their chocolate milk is 80 calories 11g protein and absolutely delicious.

  2. If you’re anywhere near an Aldi, apparently they have their own protein milk now that’s a lot cheaper

  3. They always over charge for the lactose intolerant people. It’s so unfair. Buying any substitute for dairy adds up and it’s the main reason i cant stick to a non-dairy diet. And half of the substitutions are filled with preservatives that trigger my LPR. So I completely relate to giving up certain things due to the price.

  4. Holy cow; it’s 5.39 where I am, so comparable to other lactose free milks. (Also, it seems to last longer-we don’t go through a lot of milk.)

Where I am, it’s a little under $5 (depending on store, $4.49-4.99). The Target brand is less at like $3.50. But you’re right, it’s not drastically different from skim.

  6. Where do you live? It’s under $5.00 at the Walmart near me (I don’t shop at Walmart) and still under $6 even at the world’s third worse grocery store to ever exist, Safeway. And I live in a HCOL area.

Where on earth is this priced at $12?

Edit: my bad, I realized you are extrapolating that price out to a per gallon cost.

  7. I buy it for the shelf life. Do any of the alternatives have the same long shelf life?

Price doesn’t matter when a gallon of milk goes bad after I drink less than half

  8. If you’re near a Winco their ultra pasteurized lactose free is still $3.50.

I hesitantly tried it once Fairlife went to $5 and haven’t gone back to Fairlife since.

  9. That’s what happens when you let Coca-Cola make your milk.

Fwiw I recognize its utility in terms of being lactose free and relatively protein-dense, but flavorwise I don’t think it even remotely holds a candle to a good quality milk from a local dairy. Which is often cheaper than Fairlife.

Fairlife isn’t technically even milk, in the conventional sense of the word. “Ultrafiltered milk” is an approved labeling of a subcategory of “milk protein concentrate” which is considered useful in industrial food applications because it has a lot of the desirable qualities of milk as an ingredient but basically no taste (or lactose). I’m not mentioning this as a “omg ultra processed foods!!!” alarmist but in support of my subjective assertion that Fairlife’s flavor is mid af.

Your eulogy to Fairlife has udder-ly touched and moooooved me. Life will never be the same but mooooove on we must 🥛🐄 Fair thee well, Fairlife

  11. They also have a history of sourcing milk from dairy farms with extremely abusive animal welfare practices.

  12. Aldi dupe is an OK replacement. The appeal for me, however, is the less sugar. I try to minimize sugar in all its forms, and this was the closest way to still enjoy milk. Was an occasional splurge.

Can you explain the olive reference?

  13. If you live in Texas, HEB has mootopia milk which is lactose free and has extra protein and it’s more reasonably priced.

It’s 4.97 for 52oz here on the east coast but I mostly buy for the long shelf life. Other milks go bad before I can finish them, generally. Even though it’s pricier it saves me money in the long run

That’s a well written letter and I really enjoyed reading it and you made a lot of good points.

  16. A goodbye letter to an overly-corporatized, sub-par product that solves a “problem” created by them in the first place. Fuckin’ wild.

  17. I am going to get hate for this but….. but whole milk and cut it in half with water. 💥 better than skim

  18. And Fage Greek Yogurt was $9 a tub at the store!! I bought a gallon of milk for $3.5 to make my own. Geez.

  19. HistoricalAvocado201 on

I had to do the same today. It’s $4.99 here, and a whole gallon of regular milk is $2.50. and with my protein bars $10 a box, gotta make some cuts somewhere. (In all honesty I shouldnt buy the protein bars either)

They got exposed for animal cruelty recently at their farms. I stopped drinking any fair life products
