Inspired to try my hand at sushi after following this page.

I have tons of room for improvement! I’m super picky about sushi rice & mine flat out sucked!

Even though I watched a ton of YouTube videos my maguro slices weren’t quite right. (Fatty tuna)

I did well with the salmon, I think.

It was a ton of work & next time I’ll do it in courses instead of trying to present all of it at once!!

I’d eat the hell out of it if it’s good fish.

How sharp is your knife? If you’re going to be going in on learning how to prepare sushi (and just cooking in general) you should for sure pick up at least a cheap sharpening stone set. With a little practice it’s very easy to whip even a shitty $12 Walmart knife into a razor that you you can shave with and slice a potato so fine you can see through it like a foggy windshield.

  3. This looks so unbelievably good! For your first time making sushi, you did an amazing job

  4. Good for you. It probably tastes great. I think it was finished 20% of the way through the process, though, and maybe as a second attempt you’d be better off simplifying and honing the basic knife sharpening and fish cutting skills as really all you need is two fingers of rice and then fish on top, maybe a dab of wasabi in between if that’s your preference.

  5. Please be extra careful with raw fish.
Either pick an expensive brand that’s sold to make sushi (they have labels and do tests)
Or pick a piece not close to the skin to avoid parasites
(still expensive but less than name brand ; but no guarantee but safer than a skin piece)

  6. I can feel your enthusiasm through my phone. I love it.

Keep at it. Watch some videos. If you have a local restaurant that serves sushi worth a damn, befriend one of the chefs. More than likely they’d be delighted to show off their niche set of skills to someone wanting to learn them

I’m sure it was delicious, but for the safety of your fingers… sharpen your knife! A dull knife is thought to be more dangerous because you have to exert more force.
