I was picking out some kettle corn popcorn and comparing the labels, when I realized how different some of the labels were!! Normally I am not so strict on weight vs. label portion size (like x chips or cups, etc.) But this is making me rethink. Not trying to fear monger or push people into weighing if they do not like to but I was shocked to see this!! 1 whole entire cups is a huuuggeee difference

With popcorn, this doesn’t alarm me. Different brands using different varieties of popcorn can have result in different volumes for the same weight (for instance, a brand using a variety of kernel that pops larger and fluffier than another will provide more cups for the same weight as the other).

In case you don’t know, different types of popcorn kernels can indeed take up different amounts of space.

You’ll see it if you jump around between popcorn brands, some more butterfly shaped popcorn take up more space for the same amount of weight than ones that pop intil little puffballs.

Likewise, for kettlecorn, seasoning makes a big difference in weight.

  3. These are two different brands. One could use lard to pop the corn in and a bucket of sugar to coat it. I would never expect two brands for a manufactured food to be the same?

Popcorn has a wide range of varieties (think of popcorn as a dog, but dogs come as golden retrievers, labs, pomeranians, ie all shapes, sizes, colours, etc). Brands don’t use the same variety. As such there is a difference in the calories per weight/volume. Regardless of what you are eating though, weighing is far more accurate than volume.

Genuinely curious: is there any list of ingredients for both packages? Because the calories are indeed the same for 28 g, so I guess the ingredients should be the same too.

  6. Volume and density can differ while weight remains the same. Not everything has the same bulk density.

What’s deceptive? The first package has 630 kcal and the second has 700 kcal. How many actual servings you split each package into is up to you.
