  1. I still remember my mom telling me there was something medically wrong with her because she was trying to lose weight but hadn’t lost a pound in weeks even though she was eating healthy. I was like ok what are you eating. Turns out she was going through almost 700 calories a day of just hummus because she was snacking on a tub of it all day. Not counting the triscuit crackers lol. “But they’re healthy!”

I know I might be in the minority but I hate hummus so much for this reason! It’s healthy and delicious but so calorie dense. I can eat a whole tube in one sitting and it will be like ~800kcal + it doesn’t fill me up that much. I just avoid it tbh.

  3. It’s the olive oil and the amount of tahini in it that makes it so calorie dense I guess. I usually make hummus at home with some modifications and it comes to around 100-120 calories for the same serving amount.

  4. I love it so I started making my own and using way less olive oil than the recipes suggest. You can also blend in a good amount of veggies without affecting the taste/texture too much which adds a good amount of volume for little calories

Cedar’s, available at Whole Foods, puts out a fat- and oil-free hummus that is only 25 cal for two Tablespoons. Not as good as regular, but it’ll do!

I always make my own just because I panic at the way it’s conventionally sold. Luckily, it’s easy and cheaper that way, so it’s still a win even though it’s kind of a behavior.

I just realized how calorie dense it is, too. Actually happened when I was at home making my own hummus for the second time ever today. The first time I made it was more than six years ago, and I don’t remember wondering how many calories were really in this stuff as I was dumping half a cup of tahini into the chickpeas (like I was today). It really does surprise me though, because I eat a ton of hummus, and I never portion it. I think I eat probably half of one of the standard size tubs (not the huge ones. The smaller, flatter looking tubs. I’m sorry I don’t know the exact measurements used) per sitting. So I go through one of those tubs every two or three days. But I don’t usually eat much else during the day if I have pita bread and hummus during my lunch break, and I work a pretty physically demanding job, so I think I’d be watching my intake a lot more if I were less active during the day. It’s so surprising how many calories it has, though… so sad :((

Your hummus is my peanut butter haha. I used to think that I can eat it as much as I want, since it’s healthy. Well I found out the hard way when I kept gaining weight despite eating regular nutritious food n working out 😭. Same with dates, another calorie bomb I would eat generous amounts of, coz it was a healthy dessert.

Make your own! You can cut out the oil entirely and sub some of the tahini with aquafaba and really cut the calories while still having great texture and flavor.

  10. It blows my mind now that I’m calorie counting how bad some of the stuff was I was eating that I thought was good for me, and how solid some things are that I always figured was bad lol

  11. If you like red pepper and still love hummus, the Summer Fresh red pepper one is less than usual servings and really good for salad dressings/ dips. It was a good substitute that worked for me in my budgeting of cals. But also, regular hummus is so good and great for you so it you have it with low cal snacks like you have in this picture (cucumber, peppers, carrots, rice crackers), try your best to enjoy! I know it can be hard on the brain once you know how many calories are in the things you love 💙

Store bought hummus is made with olive oil which drastically increases the calories. I make my own, usually, but instead of olive oil I use the aquafaba from the can of chickpeas, which keeps the calories low and adds fluffiness to the hummus since it whips up like egg whites.

If you have a good food processor, you can make your own and blend skinned cucumber into it, season with garlic and lemon juice + whatever you want. You can control the oil/tahini content if you make your own and you can even make it without them.

Yeah, tahini is where most of those calories come from. I’ve made some homemade “hummus” with some substitutions that are less calories – natural peanut butter, sesame oil, or boiled peanuts… all with a light touch. I’ve found jacking up the lemon juice and garlic really helps – use fresh for best results. Skip the olive oil all together.

That cup is tiny I could knock down like 6 of those in one sitting, I have a problem and need help, hummus has taken over my life

Hello!! What app do you use, it is very hard to find “grape stuffed leaves” anywhere 😭 the struggle of a middle eastern! Also i am so surprised by dense hummus is😭

Pro tip : just slice a bunch of cucumbers and then put two three spoons of hummus in a bowl with the cucumber and shake it , it will spread on every slice and very low cal .

  18. I’ve had such a violent realization with hummus when I started counting macros. I threw the biggest fit. It’s just… not fair 😂
