Jungsik marked my 50th Michelin-starred restaurant and it immediately became one of my favourites. I'm definitely biased as my palate prefers Asian food. For me, it felt like a very comforting fine-dining experience, rather than an all-out creative one.
Favourites
The Striped Jack, Scallop, and Yellowtail Kimbap were all true highlights. The Yellowtail Kimbap might be one of my favourite dishes of all the time. The perfectly seasoned gim with just the right crunch, as well as the stuffed truffle rice inside together with the yellowtail were absolutely sublime.
Great on execution, but no wow-factor
The Octopus and Artic Char were both good, but didn’t “wow” me like the rest of the dishes. The Octopus was perfectly cooked and the gochujang aioli was a great pairing, but it was still slightly too greasy for me (which I totally expected beforehand). The Arctic Char was also perfectly cooked, but wasn’t memorable enough.
Service
As for the service, all servers were absolutely splendid. Perfect recommendations, no faults, and made us feel totally at ease. The only service mishaps were created by one server who only came by twice, once to put down cutlery (clearly slanted), and a dish (didn’t explain anything, just stated the title of the dish). Besides the obvious nitpicking, service overall was amazing.
Overall conclusion
I’d highly recommend Jungsik. It’s not often you see an Asian 3-star, especially one based in a western country. If it weren’t for the fact that they rarely change their menu, I’d happily return. Together with Sorn (Bangkok), this is my favourite 3-star.
