  1. Wanted to put a low budget variety meal together and figured hotdogs might be fun. Here’s my rating of everything:

Chicken Chili Dog – 8/10 – Used chili instead of traditional pico for a Mexicali, didn’t use Bacon, but it was still very good, probably needed slightly more avocado.

Mexicali – 8.5/10 – My wife’s favorite tonight, still no pico and we used Labneh instead of Mayo, it was really good, I might add some grilled onions next time.

Mac N Cheese – 6/10 – Honestly a bit too dry, I tried to use a toasted panko with cheap velveeta Mac n Cheese, it wasn’t cheesy enough, I would use a bechemel next time so everything is way cheesier.

Coney Dog – 7.5/10 – It’s a classic and I didn’t riff on it, next time I might cut a bit of sour cream into my homemade chili.

Chicken Bacon Ranch – 8/10 – I diluted the ranch a bit too much, but I was still happy with how it turned out, adding the shredded mozzarella was a good call.

  2. Nice effort, when I eat 5 hotdogs at home, I don’t even bother with a bun. Just some mustard on the plate with em… maybe 2 kinds of mustard if I’m not lazy

  3. I just ate a ton of food so my stomach can’t get around to being excited, but that is a heck of a spread!

That’s not a Coney Dog. Coneys are a Detroit favorite – no bean chili, heavy on cumin, diced white onions and mustard. The meat in the chili is cut super small – no big chunks. There are a couple of shops in Detroit that will FedEx you chunks of their frozen chili, which are WELL worth getting. National and American are the two best known.

Might I suggest the Sonoran dog for next time too? But these look tasty and fun!

This is an impressive display of engineering, however someone has made some critical errors. I’ll take a hot dog. On a bun. With mustard, thank you. – Ron Swanson

May I suggest a Carolina dog for the next round? Chili, coleslaw, yellow mustard, and fresh diced onions

  8. As someone who lives 100 miles from Mexicali, I googled ‘Mexicali hotdog’ to see what it is and this post was the third result. The second result showed hotdogs wrapped in corn tortillas so I don’t know what to think.

I second trying Sonoran hotdogs, those are the ones we see being served around here.
