Just got back from Thailand and had the privilege to dine at Sorn while in Bangkok. I have included a picture of every dish with the exception The Sea Holds the Forest (I took a video of the server mixing the ingredients), Morning Glory, and Sago (my husband chose that dessert).

I have had the opportunity to now eat at 5 of the current 50 Best Restaurants: Potong, Sorn, Merito, Mayta, and Alcalde (technically 51 but who’s counting), and Sorn easily blows all 4 out of the water. This was the best fine dining experience I have ever had.

Every dish was so well crafted and plated but I want to highlight what stood out to me:

The dinner starts off strong with Let’s Eat Rice, the perfect bite. If these were being passed around on a tray as hors-devours, I would be following the server all night.

The Silver Sillago was another fun crunchy bite. I’m a sucker for anything crunchy and the curry paste was a great stroke of flavor that comes at the end of your bite.

The Ocean was an interesting course because the blue crab was the weakest dish in the entire dinner but the lobster was so meaty and fresh and smooth. The spotted Babylon had a nice spice to it.

Sotong (the squid), was also one of the weakest dishes on the menu, chewy and not much flavor

I know the Crab Stick is one of their signatures. Meaty piece of crab with a spicy chili paste, could have had 5 more of these.

The Melinjo is easily the best broth I have ever tasted. Newly in tears drinking the broth. The smoothest, richest flavor that felt so comforting.

However the star of the show is the main course. Every dish prior could’ve been abysmal and it wouldn’t have mattered because of the dishes that came with the main course was the best meal I’ve ever encountered, eaten, and experienced.

The rice was cooked to absolute perfection, fluffy. The condiments were so varied, sweet, spicy, crunchy. The omelet was dense and flavor and it was accompanied with a curry sauce that was so flavorful, an almost mole-like richness and depth. But the star was the roti with the beef. Tender, rich, paired with the crispy slightly sweet roti. Absolute perfection.

The meal then moves into the dessert portion. A lot of variety but fine dining rarely executes desserts well and this unfortunately falls into that category. Plus I did not fall in love with Thai desserts, so this portion of the meal was just fine, appreciate the exposure to new desserts and flavors and variety however.

With all that being said, the service was impeccable. Very kind and friendly staff, great execution and attentiveness. I’m not sure how common this is but both my husband and I were surprised and them not only offering more of the sauce that came with the omelette but also more beef with the main course. We have never been offered more food during a fine dining experience without having to order it (we took them up on the more sauce but not the beef due to being too full).

I will have to put Sorn in a different category or every fine dining restaurant will pale in comparison moving forward. It was an absolutely incredible experience and so pleased I was able to snag a reservation during my time in Thailand.
