Before COVID, I desperately tried to make a reservation at Den, but even after calling more than a hundred times, I failed. On this trip to Tokyo, I decided to try again on a whim. Perhaps I was very lucky, my second call was answered, and my reservation was confirmed the same day.

Since I’m not particularly good at analyzing each individual dish, I’d like to share my overall experience instead.

First of all, I don’t think Den itself is “fine” in the traditional sense. As you can see from photos, purely in terms of plating, it doesn’t compare to many high-end restaurants in Tokyo; some dishes even feel quite casual. The ingredients used are also mostly not what one would conventionally consider premium. As for the flavors, I wouldn’t say that any dish was truly mind-blowing. The flavors are not especially layered or complex, nor particularly delicate, and some are quite home-style (for example, the pork miso soup). Therefore, if you come expecting a classic fine-dining experience, you may well be disappointed.

That said, this meal felt genuinely warm and comforting. From the flavors, textures, and combinations of ingredients, to the interactions with the staff, the conversations of fellow diners, and the overall atmosphere of the restaurant, everything contributed to a sense of being at home, relaxed and able to enjoy good food without pressure. My favorite dish was the signature salad. To be honest, I had no expectations at all and assumed it would be a simple mixed greens dish. Instead, the care put into the variety of vegetables, their flavors, temperatures, and cooking methods (pickled, steamed, fried, air-dried, and more) was remarkable. It not only highlighted the natural flavors of seasonal produce but also made the combination feel diverse and engaging rather than monotonous.

There were also dishes that felt as though they could use just a little more of something. For example, the steamed fish (can’t remember the name of it but I think it’s mackerel). The fish was cooked perfectly and was beautifully rich, with a light, slightly sweet sauce. Still, I couldn’t help feeling that a touch more smokiness or char might have made it a perfect dish. But much like home cooking, perhaps perfection isn’t always the goal; sometimes it’s the comfort you feel while eating that matters most.

All in all, this was not a dazzling or shocking meal, yet it has a certain magic. I find myself repeatedly recalling the dining experience and the flavors of each dish. I’m very grateful that I had the chance to dine here, and I’m confident this won’t be my last visit.

  1. Was here at the same time and unable to get a reservation. I’m holding you personally responsible.

  2. Your review largely comports with my experience in November 2025 (with a few different dishes). The hospitality and warmness of the service really stayed with me.

Summed up my experience as well. Food was not mind blowing or amazing, however the hospitality and homeliness sticks with you.

I doubt i want to suffer through that reservation process again though.
