I really wanted some beancurd wrapped around something and pan-fried but didn’t feel like driving to buy beancurd sheets or wait to rehydrate mushrooms/ fungi/ conpoy, after an entire day prepping jerky. But the store down the block had fried tofu puffs on sale and a special on pre-seasoned fish paste (dace fish).
One does not get the pleasing pink/ rose colour as from cooked shrimp paste, nor as much umami sweetness, but it did the job at almost 1/3 the price. Continued laziness so I just drizzled some bottle abalone (flavoured) sauce (LKK brand) instead of making a proper gravy with black beans.
I’d totally get this (I suspect house-made from expiring fish) paste if I see it on sale again ($15.40/kg, $6.99/lb). But I would fold in some fish sauce and finely minced garlic before using, though.
