Turns out homemade hummus is not as high calorie as the store bought stuff, I had to quadruple check bc I was blown away by the volume.
I learned how to make hummus when I worked at a cafe, happy to share my recipe with y’all.
Roasted red pepper hummus:
- 3 cans chickpeas
- small jar roasted red peppers
- tbsp minced garlic
- 2 tbsp tahini
1) Drain first two cans of chickpeas, save the juice from the last can and set aside. Pour the beans into a blender, then add in the roasted peppers and tahini.
2) in a small skillet, sauté garlic to your liking. Add to the blender.
3) pour in some juice from the beans, blend, and add more if needed. Blend until smooth and creamy.
4) salt and pepper to taste, and blend once more to mix.
It’s as simple as that! This makes quite a bit so feel free to scale down. I only used a spritz of oil and some water to sauté the garlic, and without all the extra oil that store bought hummus boasts, the calories are much lower. Today I had 211g for 206.5cal.
Enjoy!
