I tried pupusas for the first time a few years ago and I’ve been *obsessed* ever since. I love buying them from my local Salvadoran restaurant, but like everything else these days, they’ve gotten more expensive. But, I saw someone making them from scratch on TikTok recently and using their tips, I decided to try making them myself. I made the Salvadoran refried beans yesterday and sautéed some jalapeños before I started today (I like mine with beans, cheese and jalapeños). I only had maseca tamal, so I used a coffee grinder to make the masa finer. They were super easy to form once I got the dough right, but I had the heat too high for the first few and they got too crispy. Once I lowered the heat, they turned out perfect!
Since this was just a test run, I didn’t make the curtido or salsa to go with them, but I will when I make them again this weekend. I know they don’t look the most glamorous without all the “accessories” lol but I’m so proud of how they turned out!
