Localis is THE OTHER one-star restaurant in Sacramento, CA, constantly living in the shadow of the more famous and flashy The Kitchen. Today, despite being an evening-only restaurant, they decided to host ¡BRUNCH!, so we had no choice but to check it out!

Everything was delicious of course, but since we’re talking brunch, I’d just as soon skipped the course of greens and replaced it with some fruit or bacon. They also presented a basket of little bready nibbles, but while they were all tasty on their own, I don’t know if they belonged together. A buttermilk biscuit, a flaky kougin amann, and a jalapeño cornbread? Together? It was an odd choice and I don’t think they complimented each other.

The eggs in the steak and eggs were pillowy soft and the crabcakes were delightful. The MVP for me were the potatoes, which were salty and soft and crunchy and seemingly held together by dreams.

The finisher was a charming little individual pavlova with orange that was perfectly crisp and tasted like a creamsicle. Unfortunately, though, the orange slice did not cut very cleanly, and the whole little dish sort of shattered and tore apart as you tried to cut through it.

It was a lovely meal and despite the heavy day drinking, I felt fine afterwards. I think that it’s clever of Localis to limit the brunch gimmick to a “special event”. Knowing it might not happen again makes it feel more special.

And it makes me glad that I was on their mailing list so I knew about it!

Very enjoyable, glad I went.
