I recently did a two-week trip to China and spent three days in Shanghai. Incredible city overall with an amazing dining scene.
Fu He Hui (Photos 1-4) was unfortunately very disappointing. For those unfamiliar, it’s a high-end vegetarian tasting menu. The ambiance was beautiful and service was friendly and professional, although it was a bit unusual that they don’t offer wines by the glass.
The food, unfortunately, just didn’t work for us. There was only one dish we truly enjoyed — the hairy gourd salad. They seemed very proud of using 16 different ingredients. Everything else felt underwhelming and lacked depth or excitement. We rarely leave dishes unfinished, but here we left most of the courses behind, which the staff didn’t seem particularly surprised by. Food wise I’d rate it around 3/10, maybe 4/10 overall including ambiance.
Thankfully, Da Vittorio Shanghai (5-7) was fantastic. Every single dish landed perfectly with no misses. Service was excellent and very polished. If you go for the full tasting menu, definitely ask them to include the Egg à la Egg and the tiramisu as additional courses — both were highlights.
Standout dishes were both pasta courses, the lobster, and the Egg à la Egg. Also a great touch was the menu, which comes as a small book — very creative and a great souvenir. Overall around 8–8.5/10.
Taian Table (8-12) was another highlight. I’m personally a big fan of chef’s table concepts, so this was an easy choice. The food was outstanding and we ended up talking with the head chef and sous chef for about 40 minutes, which made the experience even more memorable.
There were no weak courses, and even the desserts and petit fours were excellent — which says a lot because I usually dislike petit fours. Standouts for me were the chicken, turbot, and kanpachi. 8.5/10
