I made this cake a bunch during COVID, so I have some suggestions. First, it’s easier just to mix up the batter in a separate bowl. This way you can also grease the cake pan. Second, replace the water with cooled coffee. It really makes it taste more chocolatey with no real coffee flavor. Finally, adding about a 1/2 cup of chocolate chips is nice. I usually didn’t frost the cake, just dusted it with powdered sugar or sprinkles.
